In January of 2018, FMDC was first approached about the possibility of taking over Rock Creek School. After 4 months of working out ALL the details, Fearless Motion Dance Center can officially say they have a permanent location and will be taking over Rock Creek School’s space!!!! Ms Bri & Ms Callie have been working hard on making their dreams a reality, and they are so proud to say they are one step closer… the real fun is just beginning 🙂

FMDC is lucky enough to have one large studio, that will have state of the art dance floors, ballet barres, and mirrors. There will be a comfortable lobby with a viewing window into the studio. Ms Bri & Ms Callie can’t express enough how excited they are for everyone to see the current space transform into a true Dance Studio. FMDC’s fall schedule goes live June 1st. With over 30 classes to choose from, in all styles, there is truly something for everyone. FMDC will have dance class for ages 18 months all the way through 18 years old, as well as, kids and adult yoga classes. Check out the amazing class line up right HERE!

FMDC’s summer is going to be jam packed with so many amazing activities, and we want all of you to be a part of it! Here are a few dates you will WANT to put on your calendar….

When is the last time you saw a live performance?

Think back to a time when you saw a concert, a ballet, a play….. what do you remember? Perhaps you remember the anticipation, the energy of people milling around-finding their seats, the bright stage lights, the excitement of doing something out of the ordinary, getting to see an idol. The list can go on and on and this is before the show has even started.

Here at FMDC, we believe that dance is one of the most important skills a person can learn. But we also believe it is just as important to view live dance, experiencing the art form in person. Being able to view a live performance allows you to feel the energy, see the facial expressions, hear the jumping/beating of feet on the floor and the breathing. It is an amazing thing to see in person. Yes, you can see dancing on TV or in a movie, but it isn’t quite the same as seeing it live.

We certainly wish we could see more live performance, but we try our best to make it to as many as we can. Here are a few shows Miss Bri and Miss Callie have seen over the past couple of months…

The Colorado Ballet performed Romeo and Juliet February. Neither Miss Bri nor Miss Callie had ever seen Romeo and Juliet in person. Most likely you are familiar with the popular scene of Juliet standing on the balcony and Romeo calling out to his love. Now we know why this is such a popular scene! This ballet was full of so many theatrical elements, and drama. It was a great experience to see ballet in a different light.

Miss Callie was able to see Keigwin + Company perform at the Lakewood Cultural Center in February. Keigwin + Company is a contemporary dance company based out of NYC and they presented K+C Celebrate Bernstein. In this program it highlights the music of Leonard Bernstein (you should listen to his compositions if you haven’t already). The movement was spunky, lively, and intriguing, and of course the dancers were strong, fluid, and extremely musical!

This past March Ms Bri and Ms Callie went and saw L.A. Dance Project which was everything they wanted and more. L.A. Dance Project was founded by Benjamin Millepied in 2012 (former dancer of New York City Ballet). Ms Callie and Ms Bri’s favorite piece of the evening was “Hearts & Arrows” choreographed by Mr. Millepied. The New York Times describes this piece the best “the way he keeps his eight dancers constantly moving through asymmetrical and contrapuntal patterns…Everything is unexpected, everything feels serendipitously right.” Fun fact- LADP allows all audience members to take photo during the performance!

We also attend dance competitions throughout Denver. We love to see what the latest trends are and what songs are being used. Plus, we are so excited to see all the passionate kids doing what they were meant to do, dancing on stage.

FMDC challenges you to get out there and see LIVE ART!!

Much Love!! Ms Bri & Ms Callie

Looking back at the past 6 months…

Where in the world has the time gone??? We are more than halfway through December and quickly coasting into the new year. Five months ago, when we announced the launch of our dance studio, we had a few goals to complete before the end of the year and we are happy to say we can cross a few things off our list!! First, we are still on track to open our studio in August of 2018 (wooohooo!!!).

IMG_2814

We are very excited to announce that we will be teaching under the FMDC name starting in January -YAY!! FMDC has partnered with two businesses in Superior, CO and we can’t wait to start working with them. First we will be offering adult yoga classes with CrossFit Cielo. We will admit that we don’t do CrossFit ourselves, but that is slowly changing. Of course we had to try a class out and we were a bit nervous to say the least…really nervous actually. Throwing tires around wasn’t of interest to us. Thankfully tire throwing was not involved in the class we took. DK and Bailey (the owners of CrossFit Cielo) were both very welcoming, encouraging, and instructive. We survived our first class and guess what??? We even went back for more and tried their adult gymnastics class. We believe that our partnership with CrossFit Cielo is the perfect fit!

RCAS awardOur second partnership is with Rock Creek After-School. This is an after school program in Superior, CO. We will be offering creative movement, hip hop and kids yoga with Rock Creek. We will get to start teaching DANCE classes under the FMDC name which is a dream come true!! This business recently won an award for Best Child and Best Day Camp (WOWZERS). Miss Shantie is obviously doing something right and is dedicated to her kids and business. We truly cannot wait to see how this partnership grows with the new year.

While we have been busy creating partnerships, we’ve still been busy developing our studio from the ground up…busy might be an understatement. Check out the list below of what we have accomplished so far and what we are currently working on.

  • Business plan (we spent almost a year on this)
  • Loan application
  • Liability Insurance
  • Indiegogo campaign (read about all details below)
  • Taught our first official FMDC yoga class (It went OOOMMMM-azing)
  • Purchased teaching supplies
  • Created a logo (About a 4 month development process)
  • Started the website development
  • Began marketing for January classes (Thank goodness for DSOA…WE LOVE YOU CLINT and the DSOA Team!!!)

IMG_2964Let’s talk about our crowdfunding on Indiegogo. Since we haven’t received a loan yet, we were/are in need of financing to get everything started. If you aren’t familiar with crowdfunding, it provides entrepreneurs with a platform to explain their business and then allows people to ‘back’ the business. By backing, people are able to donate and contribute to the entrepreneur’s idea. FMDC chose Indiegogo as their platform. Feel free to check it out here. From the bottom of our hearts we want to THANK ALL OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS who have made our campaign successful. Every contribution meant the world to us and we have raised just about $5,000.00!!!!

We have gone from writing emails on a bed to setting up our own office space. Yes, we might have pushed together two old desks and called it our office, but having our own creative space is important to us. We are now at the point of no return, but the future looks bright to us.

Exciting things happening….

  1. Callie (Co-founder & Artistic Director) was a guest artist with Whitney Waugh Dance Company and performed with them the second weekend of December. Ms. Callie is hanging up her performance shoes for a bit so she can devote all her time to FMDC.
  2. FMDC starts teaching adult & kids yoga, and dance classes under their name in partnership with Rock Creek After School and Crossfit Cielo.
  3. Probably the most exciting….. Bri and Callie’s dream of owning a dance studio is REALLY HAPPENING. They are getting closer and closer to the grand opening in August 2018.

Keep following FMDC on social media, IG: @fearlessmotiondance & FB: @fearlessmotiondance, and stay up to date on all things FMDC! Thanks for being a part of this crazy, amazing journey 🙂

Creating FMDC’s Vision Board

“I don’t have dreams, I have goals”

You may be wondering why in the world Bri and Callie are spending time on a Vision Board? There are so many items/systems to get in place when opening a dance studio, IMG_2562and many do not think of a vision board being part of the grand plan. But Bri and Callie firmly believe that writing your goals down, effectively helps make those goals turn into something tangible and real. Also, it has helped them become clearer about what exactly their vision is for the future studio. They know that the journey to studio ownership can be full of many ups and downs, and they are hoping their Vision Board will always give them an extra bit of inspiration to keep going no matter what.

Jen Sincero, author of You are a Badass, says “Our minds think in images. Feeding your mind full of images of the things and experiences you want your mind to manifest….is hugely powerful because your mind sends that image out to source energy which begins the process of pulling it in.”

How the Board was Made

Materials Used:

  • Large bulletin board
  • Pushpins
  • Magazines (Dance and Dance Teacher Magazine, Yoga Journal, Athleta) FullSizeRenderreally anything with inspiring images and wording
  • Cardstock with fun decorations
  • Cut-out letters
  • Glue stick
  • Markers (Sharpies in different colors work best)
  • Glitter
  • Creativity…this one is free! Have fun and stay true to what works for you 🙂

Board Setup:

Bri and Callie decided to break up their board into different sections….

  • 5 goals for the studio within the first yearIMG_2560
  • Fearless Motion’s Culture
  • Pictures that represented our future students
  • Inspirational quotes
  • Miscellaneous tidbits

Give it a shot! We had so much fun creating our board. While we didn’t have a clear vision right away, we started by finding images and quotes that spoke to us. Once we compiled quite a few items, we decided to see what worked for both of us and started laying everything out. It took us a few tries to find what worked, but there is nothing wrong with trial and error. While, we didn’t use every quote or image, we are very pleased with the outcome. The vision board is placed in a location that we can see every day, so we can remind ourselves what we are working towards!

Dance Teacher Summit 2017- Long Beach

Words cannot even begin to explain the weekend we had at Dance Teacher Summit (DTS), August 3rd-6th in Long Beach, California. Have you ever attended an event and was completely blown away from the experience? Well let us tell you about our magical weekend at Dance Teacher Summit.

On August 3rd, we arrived in Long Beach, California for DTS. This is an annual conference for dance studio owners/ teachers and gives everyone a chance to learn from each other and industry experts. We were able to attend workshops, seminars, lunches, and movement classes. If you have ever been to a convention, this was the dance teacher version 🙂 With around 1,000 studio owners/teachers together for the weekend, the learning never ended.

File_000 (2)
Every attendee received a goody bag full of amazing dance products!!!

Three of our biggest take aways:

  1. We are in this together (all dance studio owners/teachers). Love, support and grow from one another. We all have the same goal, so don’t be in competition with each other. We were in awe of how everyone wanted to help us! Of course, we are just starting out and wanted to soak up as much information as possible.
  2. Not only are we training dancers for dance, but for life! We get to help shape our students into compassionate, fearless, kind human beings. Everything learned in dance can be applied off the dance floor.
  3. We are the CEO’s of our business. Yes, we are the studio owners and teachers, but above all else, we are the CEO’s. Our business starts with US!

The great thing about DTS is their ambassador program. These are former/current studio owners/industry experts who were around to answer questions, guide us in the right direction, provide info about the conference, etc. These ambassadors really go out of their way to make you feel welcome and we had the honor of sitting down with a few and were able to pick their brains.

Bri & Callie at the end of Day 1

On our very first day during a round table talk with other studio owners, we met Donna Aravena who co-owns Seven Star School of Performing Arts with her daughter Nicole Aravena. We had a few more questions for her, and she immediately suggested we meet over lunch the next day. She handles mainly the business side at the studio, and her knowledge on how to work numbers truly shined as she spoke to us (gained some helpful ideas we will be implementing). She never shied away from helping us understand what we need to do to set-up our business up for success. Also, one morning over breakfast we sat at a random table, and met Sue Sampson-Dalena owner of The Dance Studio of Fresno. Her welcoming spirit was infectious, and we immediately dived into conversation about studio ownership.  We talked about funding, renting vs. buying a studio, and the extreme importance of a strong ballet program. One of the most amazing parts of talking to these ambassadors was their willingness to completely convey what they have done wrong, and what they have done right. They even encouraged us to reach out to them after the summit if we had further questions. Even though our conversations didn’t last hours, we felt that we made a support group!!

Movement Classes/ Seminars/ Workshops at DTS

While we loved absolutely everyone who taught and spoke at DTS, we do have a few that stood out…

Clint Sanders  if you haven’t listened to any of Clint’s podcasts on studio ownership DO IT!! He is full of knowledge and his Australian accent isn’t bad on the ears either. We enjoyed his Studio Owner Session: Dance Studio Reboot.

Misty Lown was AMAZING!!! We loved all of her classes – Filing Fall Classes, Financial Freedom for Studio Owners, Marketing to the Millennial Parent.

Francisco Gella held a few different workshops, but we stopped in for Ballet Barre & Center Work (with a twist). We loved how he stressed, over and over again, that dance teachers must come to class PREPARED!

Jessica Scheitler broke down all of the monotonous finical numbers into an easily approachable plan- Budgeting: Pirouette your way to profit,  Tax Tricks: Fancy Footwork to Save You Money.

file_002.jpeg
Bri ready for Day 2

Kim MCSwain is a teacher who truly loves what she is doing, and it shows in her work. Both of her seminars touched on how we as teachers must be validating, respecting, and helping our students become the best versions of themselves, not only in the studio, but also in life. We took Teaching from the Inside Out: Inspiring Today’s Generation and Educating While Entertaining: Training Dancers under 12 yrs old.

Denise Wall is a bundle of energy that could probably keep talking for hours on end about anything dance. She has years of experience and we especially loved how she stressed the importance of releve in all pirouettes in her Turns workshop.

Talia Favia has this gorgeous athletic movement that is complimented with a softness. We experienced this while taking her Contemporary class. Fun fact- Talia won the Capezio A.C.E Awards in 2014…Pretty sure her work is about to blow up, but that is just our opinion 😉

Becca Moore and Dani Rosenberg co-own Rhythm Dance Center, but also started their own amazingly creative company- Confetti on the Dance Floor. They are the queens of branding their unique style and flair. As social media experts, they have inspired us- Spark Your Creativity, Insta-Flair.

Beat Street Expo

This is basically a dance teachers/studio owners dreams come true as every dance product, dance convention/competition, clothing line…aka anything dance comes together in one room! One of the BEST parts of the expo hall was the teacher only sessions. Check out the video below to hear about all of the amazingness the expo hall had for FMDC!

Capezio A.C.E. Awards

If you have never heard of The Capezio A.C.E. Awards it is is a choreography competition dedicated to introducing the next generation of emerging and influential choreographers to the commercial dance world. All of the pieces WOWED us, but especially loved a few specific pieces…there were TWO tap numbers which held our attention, and challenged what a viewer might typically expect from tap.

“The Light” choreography by Nick Young (artistic director of Rhythmatic Tap Company) took 2nd Runner Up… YAYAYAYAYA FOR TAP!!! The hip-hop number “The Move” choreographed by Jarrod Jenkins was so groovy, and funky in all the rights ways. Huge congratulations to “Peel” choreography by Will Johnston and Marissa Osta (Directors of Entity Contemporary Dance) as they were the big winners of the evening!! Overall, all of the pieces presented were just amazing, and we can’t wait to see more from these choreographers!

Overall, it was a whirlwind of a weekend where we gained such amazing knowledge about studio ownership. We loved every minute and want to thank all the presenters, vendors, and ambassadors for creating such a wonderful event. We have already saved the date for next years DTS conference!

Coming the first week of October our 3rd blog post:

Creating our Vision one board at a time!

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

“Be strong, be fearless, be beautiful and believe that anything is possible when you have the right people there to support you.” – Misty Copeland

Bri and Callie Frey are so excited to announce the creation of Fearless Motion Dance Center- Be Bold. Be Creative. Be Fearless. We can’t wait for you to join us on this adventure. This blog will take you on our personal journey of what it takes to open our own dance studio in Colorado. Do you want to know more? This is how it all began…

Callie-

I always credit my sister, Bri, with the reason I fell in love with dance. My mom put her in dance, because my mother loved dance as a child, but never had the opportunity to take class. As the younger sister, I wanted to do everything my older sister did, so of course, I had to take ballet too (maybe the credit should really go to my mother)… Anyways, I have vivid memories of us putting on lengthy dance shows in our basement during the summer months.

We would spend hours “creating” these dance shows, sharing our finished product with all who would watch. Fast forward to today, and once again we are about to embark on creating dances together, but on a much larger scale. Studio Ownership.

Callie dancing in the basement – 1997

My sister and I didn’t grow up dreaming about owning a dance studio together, and quite frankly two years ago it wasn’t really even on my radar, but I came to a place in my dance teaching career where I started to really ask myself where do I want to take this? How can I make this a lasting career? Besides my pure love for teaching dancing, I believe these questions are what sparked my drive for studio ownership. The more I taught, the more I wanted to have a place where I would be free to run things exactly the way I wanted. I started dreaming about creating a culture/environment that was full of positivity and uplifted every dancer in the room. This list of what I wanted in a studio could continue on and on, but you get the idea. I wanted it, and I wanted it bad. Now when all of these ideas starting to rush around in my head I had no doubt in my mind I would need my sister by my side to achieve this dream. She has been my dance partner from day one.

November 2016 was when I first asked Bri what she thought of me owning a dance studio, and of course she was supportive (just as I expected). Then I threw in the idea of us partnering together to create a studio as a team. She would step in as the Business and Yoga Director (she is a certified yoga instructor), and I, as the Artistic Director. I don’t even remember her flinching at the idea, but instead she dived in head first. We haven’t looked back since.

Bri-

For the past few years I was struggling to find a job/career that I enjoyed. I was jumping from one dead end job to another and wasn’t sure what to do next. Last fall I decided to finally do something that had been calling to me for years….yoga teacher training! And what experience teacher training was! I knew that I wanted to teach yoga at some point and the teacher training solidified this decision. It was challenging, but one of the most rewarding experiences. I met amazing people (lifelong friendships were formed) and learned so much about who I am and who I want to be.

While I grew up dancing and pursued dance for a short period of time in college, I eventually went in a different direction. When I found yoga, it offered me the chance to dance again- flowing from one pose to the next. Even when I wasn’t dancing, I was still in love with this beautiful art form. Plus, it helped that Callie (yes, we actually are best friends) was immersed in dance.

DSC06600
Bri doing yoga while camping – 2010

I was about 6 weeks into my yoga teacher training, when Callie told me she had something important to talk to me about. Of course, my mind went in a thousand different directions. Maybe she was thinking about moving again, had she met someone, she got a new job? I had no idea what she was going to say. Then she mentioned she wanted to open her own dance studio. Yes, yes, yes!!! I kept thinking Callie would be great at running her own studio. Just wait until you see her teach- you are in for a treat! She is an impressive teacher and the connection she makes with the kids is unbelievable. So overall, I was fully supportive of her decision. But then she asked me something else. What did I think of opening a dance studio with her? Ummm….obviously I agreed. I knew we would make a great team and couldn’t wait to get started.

One year ago, I never would have thought I would be starting my own business, but now that Callie and I are, there’s nothing else I could imagine doing. Earlier, I mentioned that I knew I wanted to teach yoga before I even started yoga teacher training and we have involved this in our studio plans. I have been teaching since I completed training and love sharing yoga with others. Seeing the growth in your students is amazing. Yoga is accessible to anyone and everyone. You never stop learning, which I know will hold true with our decision to start a dance studio.

So here we are, two sisters, with this big idea, and for the past 9 months we have been researching, talking, planning, and putting all our spare time into our future studio. We know this journey we are on will be full of ups and downs, but we have never felt more confident and proud of what we are doing. We are so happy to announce that Fearless Motion Dance Center – Be Bold. Be Creative. Be Fearless will be launching in late Summer of 2018. We can’t wait for you to join us on this adventure.

Be sure to follow us on Instagram, like us on Facebook, and check out our next blog: Dance Teacher Summit- Our first official dance conference as studio owners!
